Newport Pagnell Swimming Club – Report for 16th January 2005
Last weekend was busy for the club with galas at St. Neots and Luton on Saturday and the inter county match on Sunday.
Round 1 of the Home Counties League was held at the Wardown Pool at Luton. Its 33 1/3 metre length means times achieved are not acceptable for record purposes. The squad had a hard time against strong opposition, but that’s the luck of the draw. They ended up last, the winners being the Luton ‘A’ team.
Good swims came from Jessica Fuins in the 100m Butterfly, Laura Sutherland in the 100m backstroke and Charlie Bateman in the 100m breaststroke. All of their times would have been personal best swims. The only win was recorded by Joe Medrek in the 100m backstroke. Second places were achieved by Louisa Prentice in the 100m backstroke and breaststroke, Frances Merridan in the 33m freestyle and Alice Butler in the 33m butterfly. The girls 11 years and under freestyle relay team also came in second.
A novice gala at St Neots proved to be more successful with the club squad coming out on top by just 8 points from the home team.
Four swimmers came home just too fast for this timed gala to score any points. These were Matthew Leydon and Keiran Woods in the backstroke and Jonathan Fields and Hannah Wilson in the butterfly events. In doing this Keiran set a personal best time of 1m 17.37s for 100m and Hannah 42.83s for 50m.
Personal best times were set in the 50m backstroke events by Stephen Wilcox (48.55s) Kirsten Baggeley (51.41s) David Powley (46.64s) and Ashling Baggeley (49.00s). Andrew Barton (43.25s) and Chloe Errington (38.24s) beat their previous best times in the 50m freestyle and Ashling Baggeley also beat her previous best in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 1m 0.42s.
Individual wins came from Marie Patrick in two different age groups of 50m butterfly, Chloe Errington in the 50m breaststroke and Jonathan Fields and Jenny Dean in the 100m breaststroke. All of the mixed medley relay teams added maximum points to the club’s tally with their wins along with the all ages boys and girls freestyle relay teams.
Nine club swimmers were in the county squad that retained the inter counties Kingerlee Trophy for the third year in succession.
Charlotte Errington won the 100m breaststroke in 1m 18.48s while Jennifer Dean was second in the 100m freestyle in 1m 2.61s as was Ros Bray in the 100m butterfly in a time of 1m 15.85s. Claire Evelyn helped the 16 years and over freestyle relay team to their win. Ros was part of the 15 years relay teams that came second in both the freestyle and medley events. Jonathan Fields was part of the 14 years relay squad that won both the freestyle and medley events. Both Jennifer and Charlotte were in the successful medley relay team and Jennifer was also in the winning freestyle relay team. Natasha Barton was part of the 13 years medley relay team that came second and Lisa Patrick was part of the 13 years freestyle relay team that also came second. The 13 years boys relay teams could only manage third places with Carl Adamson assisting the medley team and Daniel Heath in the freestyle team.
